Get A Clue-do

My headline is soooo going to be the tagline on the up and coming Cluedo movie, it’s that good (cough). Film/ today reported the popular detective board game is going to be adapted in to a movie with Pirates Of The Caribbean director Gore Verbinski signed on. There are a stream of movies adapted from board games in the works right now since Universal Pictures made a series of deals with Hasbro to adapt their toys and games. Last year the announcement that Ridley Scott was making a movie based on Monopoly was huge news and shortly after that it came out Ethan Cohen was writing the screenplay for the Candyland movie. It was only natural Cluedo would follow as not only is it a kick-arse game, it makes much more sense as a movie than, say, Monopoly. Although I think Hungry, Hungry Hippos may just be the best concept for a movie ever. The problem is, Cluedo was already made in to a very-Kitsch movie back in the 80s, 1985 to be exact.
Clue was critically and commercially burnt at the stake but in recent years it has gained quite a cult following. One of the most interesting aspects of the ‘85 film is that it was released with alternative endings. Depending on which cinema you went to, moviegoers were presented with one of three different endings. The papers listed the film with A, B or C depending on the ending included with the print. I wonder if they will try and do that with the modern version? I could just imagine the hype that would create, especially now in the internet age. Cluedo is going to make a great film as it has the whole murder-mystery narrative and already has a built in audience considering the game has made $1 billion in sales over the last 61 years. The big issue would be with casting. There have been dozens upon dozens of versions of Cluedo over the years with the drawings of the central characters changing considerably. The most recent cover of the board game (top above) featured a younger, sexier version of the characters Professor Plum, Ms. White, Col. Mustard, Miss Peacock, Mr. Green and Ms. Scarlet. Personally I think a combination of sexy, young cast members with experienced, mature actors would be perfect. Here are my suggestions:
Miss Scarlet played by Scarlett Johansson

Colonel Mustard played by John Cleese

Professor Plum played by Hugh Laurie

Mrs Peacock played by Neve Campbell

Mr Green played by Jude Law

Mrs White played by Helen Mirren
Note: here's a bit of Movie Mazzupial trivia for you. Not only is Cluedo my favourite board game ever, I have only been beaten once in my lifetime.

Taking one for the team

The only thing better than Mark Wahlberg movie news is, well, more Mark Wahlberg movie news. The delicious, delectable and damn fine Wahlberg is set to team up with Will Ferrell in an action comedy. According to Variety, the Wahlberg-Ferrell project is being pitched to studios this week but with both stars on board, no doubt it will be green-lit in a matter of seconds. The film would be called The B-Team and the two actors play cops who, presumably, are a notch or two below A-team. This is intriguing. Why, you ask? Marky Mark has never done a comedy before. He starred as an obsessively anti-petroleum firefighter in indie flick I Heart Huckabees which was a semi-comedy (more weird absurdism than comedy) but I don’t think that counts as past experience. Usually Wahlberg is majorly in to the action, blockbuster, drama and occasionally independent roles so doing a mainstream comedy with Ferrell is a big step out for him, one which I think will pay off. Man, I can’t wait to see this. The B-Team doesn’t have a release date or director yet so it’s a fair way off.

I’m here with all of my people

Judd Apatow and the team are at it again, but this time there’s no virginity, childbirth or naked Jason Segel involved. The trailer for the director/writer/producers latest movie Funny People has literally just gone up on the web. You can check it out here. What do you think? Adam Sandler stars as a seasoned comedian, George Simmons, who learns he’s terminally ill and decides to form a friendship with an unknown comedian/writer (played by Seth Rogen) and adopt him as his opening act. Aussie maestro Eric Bana also has a major role and it’s great to see him doing comedy in Hollywood as that’s the genre he originally started out in here. Apatow’s wifey Leslie Mann also stars as does Jason Schwartzman, Jonah Hill, Sarah Silverman and RZA from the Wu-Tang Clan. Personally, I think it sounds tres exciting and I’m looking forward to the large number of decent comedies which are being released this year. Funny People is out in Australia on July 30.

The might of the knight

Batman now billion-dollar man? It would seem so. Like the fictional character Bruce Wayne, the latest Batman movie is now worth over a billion dollars. Warner Bros. made the announcement that The Dark Knight has made a worldwide gross of $1,001,082,160 -- about $533 million in the US and $567 million overseas. That’s not even figuring in DVD and merchandise sales yet! It has now become one of only four films in history to go over the billion mark with other members of the club being Titanic, Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King and Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. In fact, The Dark Knight is the second highest grossing film of all time behind Titanic. I think it’s interesting to note that both the third installment of Lord Of The Rings and Titanic won the Oscar for best picture, yet The Dark Knight didn’t even get a nomination. Okay, I swear I’ll stop bitching about it now. In more Batman news, director Chris Nolan’s next project will be the sci-fi action pic Inception which he is adapting from his original screenplay. Rumor has it that Nolan signed a deal with Warner Bros saying they would make/finance his Inception film if the next project he did after that was Batman 3. Clever man.

That's a wrap people!

The quote the 1969 song by The Dells, oh what a night. Once I got over my bitter disappointment at The Dark Knight being shunned in both the best picture and best director categories, I made a list of all my dream Oscar winners (see post titled `Looking in to my crystal ball’). Well, pretty much my entire dream list came true and I couldn’t be happier. Despite Gus Van Sant missing out for best director, everything else turned out peachy. Particularly Penelope Cruz’s win and beautiful speech, Sean Penn’s well deserved win, Dustin Lance Black’s amazingly memorable speech and of course, Heath’s posthumous victory. I thought Hugh did a great job of hosting but the best moment of the night (by far) was when James Franco and Seth Rogen presented the award for Best Live Action Short. When Franco read out the winner's name he couldn't say it properly and totally made up the pronunciation of Spielzeugland while Rogen's baboonish laugh could be heard in the background. Comedy gold, you can't script that shiz.

And we're live in 5, 4, 3, 2 . . . .

The Oscars are literally only 2 minutes away from starting! The red carpet entrances were cut way down this year to speed up the whole process but my favourite moments so far?
Emile Hirsch arrives looking a) gorgeous and b) so thoughtful by rocking a white knot to show his support for marriage equality.

Alicia Keys showed us another way to die of awesomeness. The singer looked amazing in a figure hugging, is it pink or is it purple gown. Gone is ghetto and hello is goddess.
Kate Winslet looked absolutely smashing in an elegant grey/blue gown that screamed film star. Forget flashing her tits and bits like all the other chickies on the red carpet, Winslet kept it classy. Only time will tell if she nabs the best actress Oscar for The Reader.
Mickey Rourke rocked up looking like the creepy, old man that he is. To add to his Michael Jackson-esque appearance check out the necklace he wore with a picture of his dead dog on it. Beyond disturbing.
Robert Pattison what is with you? The Twilight star look like he literally rolled straight out of bed, in to a pan of baby powder, through a giant bong and on to the red carpet. For your first Oscar appearance you certainly look like a scrubber.
What I really wanted this Oscar season was a good olBjork-fest aka someone to shock the red out of the carpet. Alas, there was no one. Why didn’t they invite Bai Ling or Katy Perry to jazz up the awards? Pics are from celebrity blogger Perez Hilton who (naturally) had all the Oscar goss and images as it happened.

Oscarlicious excitement

Today is the day! Yes, the day I look forward to more than Christmas but not more than Halloween. It’s Oscars day folks. Forget the frocks, for me it’s all about who will be taking home the shiny, naked, gold man. You’re probably sick of all my Academy Award musings, coverage and predictions so thankfully (for you) after today you won’t have to hear another word about it . . .until next year. For me personally this has to be one of the most exciting Oscar races to date and not just because of the nominees. After last years lowest rated and least watch Academy Awards ceremony ever, the pressure is on our very own Hugh Jackman to jazz up the awards and regain viewership. For the first time ever the names of award presenters have been kept firmly under wraps and word has it a huge musical number starring Jackman, Beyonce, Anne Hathaway and High School Musical star Zac Efron will open the show. In another first for the Oscars, journalists and media cameras have been kept away from rehearsals. Therefore, whatever show producers Laurence Mark and Bill Condon (of Dreamgirls fame) have in store will truly be a surprise for all. Most importantly for Australians the Academy Awards are being broadcast live for the first time ever in HD direct from the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. The who’s who of Hollywood are due to walk the red carpet any minute now so I’m off, enjoy the show and stay posted for updates on the winners.

Porno for all creatures great and small

When it comes to director Kevin Smith, I’ll be on his hypothetical sidelines shaking a big, novelty foam finger that says `K.S is #1’. Therefore, you can imagine my excitement as I skipped along to see his latest (and highly controversial) film Zack And Miri Make A Porno. Starring Seth Rogen and Elizabeth `I’m in every movie’ Banks, the pair play lifelong friends looking to solve their respective cash-flow problems by making an adult film together. And boy does Justin Long dish out a dose of awesomeness in a hilarious supporting role. Once you look past the dirty jokes and crude one-liners, the film is actually quite sweet at its core. It’s not as witty as some of Smith’s other moves but the jokes are plentiful and belly jiggling. Although this is very funny and positively charming, I can’t say it’s better than my favourite Smith film Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back but it does come in third behind Jersey Girl. And like pretty much every Smith film ever made the delicious Jason Mewes aka Jay shows up playing the character of Lester. It’s interesting to hear about all the censorship problems Smith had in the US due to the word `porno’ in the title. Which is pathetic when you consider what an insignificant word it is. Smith even had to do dozens of movie posters to go with the film because the censorship board kept banning everything he released. Australia is a bit more lenient (thank heavens) and the movie poster we received is the one pictured above. For US audiences the film was advertised through the poster below which made a joke of the fact everything Smith tried to release as a poster, they banned. In conclusion, if you want something a lil bit naughty and a lot bit brilliant Zack And Miri Make A Porno is great alternative to the overwhelming amount of sad, serious and slightly depressing films out at the mo. Below: Jason Mewes . . . .mmm, so fine.

Do the logo-motion with me

This is about as fresh as it gets people! Just minutes, yes minutes ago MTV debuted the title artwork for the newly named The Twilight Saga's New Moon. Okay, this may just be the words New Moon written in Twilight font but it's the first original image for the highly anticpated sequel so we can't help but get just a lil bit excited.
How much longer until we see set pics? Until filming starts next week in a fortnight I assume.

Insy, winsy Scarlett

It seems every day there’s news of another comic book movie being made for the silver screen with more explosions, more stars and more money being thrown at it than a stripper with beer flavoured nipples. Here’s some goss on an already successful superhero flick and soon-to-be franchise Iron Man. Mark this as strictly rumour for the moment. You may remember a while back I reported British actress Emily Blunt had been cast as villain/heroine Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow in Iron Man 2. However, the pom’s commitment to Twentieth Century Fox and the studio’s upcoming Gulliver’s Travels movie may prevent her from taking on the role. While Blunt’s reps are working furiously to reschedule her shooting dates, EW has said Marvel has been in talks with several other actors to take over the role, most notably Scarlett Johansson. Phoar! If anyone would be perfect to play Black Widow, it would be Scar-Jo! For those of you unfamiliar with the Marvel character, Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow is a Russian super spy who has featured in several comics such as Spiderman, X-Men and Iron Man to name a few. The character is stereotyped as a femme fatale and Scar-Jo has already proven she can nail that archetype, most recently as Silken Floss in The Spirit. Plus how could they think of casting Blunt over someone like Scar-Jo in the first place? Blunt is a prude and Scar-Jo is a fox, end of story. For a completely frivolous reason it would be awesome if Scar-Jo was in this flick because then she and hubby Ryan Reynolds would have both been in super-hero movies (him in X-Men Origins: Wolverine). In the meantime we can only hope that casting directors make the right choice and sign up Scar-Jo while Blunt’s team keep trying to make both projects work (unlikely given Gulliver’s is further along with a start date of April 15 while Iron Man 2 doesn’t have a shooting script or a start date yet). Stay posted for more info.

Below: Scar-Jo as the Black Widow.

Just joking folks! This is actually what the Black Widow looks like . . .

. . .and this.

Why I love riding trains

The following transcript is a conversation I overheard between a group of school boys while I rode public transport to Brisbane last night. It is a classic example of why I love riding trains, besides the cleanliness (cough).

School Boy 1: What have you got?
School Boy 2: Coke.
SB1: How much?
SB2: A litre.
SB1: What have you got?
School Boy 3: A boiled egg.
(silence)
SB1: Boiled eggs are okay . . .if you like disgusting.
SB3: Boiled eggs are a way of life.

The biggest robbery since the 2004 Northern Bank Heist

Just thought I'd rant about how unfair it is that Chris Nolan was not nominated for a best director Oscar at the up and coming Academy Awards. Seriously, The Dark Knight is nominated for Oscars in SEVEN technical categories for Best Achievement in Visual Effects, Best Achievement in Sound Editing, Best Achievement in Sound, Best Achievement in Makeup, Best Achievement in Editing, Best Achievement in Cinematography, Best Achievement in Art Direction(this is not including Heath Ledger's nomination for best supporting actor). Who oversees all that? The director, that's who! If the Academy can acknowledge The Dark Knight is Oscar worthy in those categories then it's ridiculous Nolan wasn't nominated for his direction of the second most successful film of all time. A massive oversight.
That it is all.
Note: For those of you playing at home the 2004 Northern Bank Heist occured in Belfast, Northern Irleand and was the biggest robbery in UK history. A large, proficent group of robbers believed to be from the IRA made off with £26.5 million in pounds sterling.

One-derful

Basically this is the Life Of Brian for the ipod generation. The very clever and very funny Harold Ramis has put together a comedy set in biblical times called Year One and starring Jack Black, Michael Cera, Paul Rudd, Olivia Platt and David Cross. Sound like a recipe for a disaster of biblical proportions? That’s what I though too until I watched this brilliant 2 minute scene from the movie.
Watch clip. Although this is just a snippet and things could go terribly wrong from here on in, I feel stupid for ever doubting Ramis’ ability to make with the funny. After all, he did write and direct Groundhog Day, Analyze This, Ghostbusters and Bedazzled. I particularly love the fight scene between Kane (David Cross) and Abel (Paul Rudd), it’s hilarious and definitely the way the bible intended to write it.Year One is due out in Australia on June 18.

Pirates, murder and a deranged man eating seagulls: the Watchmen spin-off has it all

I said I would keep you updated on Watchmen news and updated you shall be faithful readers! Fans of the graphic novel would be familiar with Tales Of The Black Freighter which is an apocalyptic pirate comic-book within Watchmen. Well, the morbid tale is being released on DVD as a companion piece to the main feature. Watch the Tales Of The Black Freighter trailer here. Be warned, those hoping for a cheery Watchmen spin-off should prepare for a very dark, violent and at times horrific pirate tale – but oh how spectacular the visuals look. Scottish actor Gerard Butler voices the mariner and from the looks of the corpse raft, this isn’t a cartoon for the kiddies. Tales Of The Black Freighter is in stores on April 22 in DVD and Blue-ray format, and runs for around 22 minutes. Watchmen addicts will also be drooling over the news a 36-minute pseudo-documentary looking at Nite Owl's autobiography, Under The Hood, will be included.
Below: A taste (pardon the pun) of the Tales Of The Black Freigther comic within a comic.

Looking in to my crystal ball . . . . .

With the Oscars less than five days away, I figured it was time for Movie Mazzupial to unveil some predictions. Well, I say predictions but really these are the people/films I want to win. The people I think will actually win are highlighted in green and the people I want to win are in pink. If I believe the planets will align and what I want to win and what I think will win are the same thing, then it will appear in blue. Confused? So am I. Franklyn my dear, I don’t give a damn

Masked vigilanties are soooo hot right now. Every second day I hear news of a new comic hero being adapted for the big screen offering bigger bangs, brighter lights and more bucks being thrown at it than a stripper with beer flavoured nipples. When I heard about the concept behind UK film Franklyn, I must say I was a little impressed. Yes there’s a masked vigilante in it but don’t groan just yet because a) it’s only one of the key plot points of the film and b) said vigilante is Ryan Phillippe. Writer-director Gerald McMorrow wrote the original science fiction script Franklyn back in 2002 and it's very unique (to say the least). Set in a futuristic London society where there is no separation between Church and State, it follows the tales of four characters. Jonathan Preest (Phillippe) is a masked vigilante who won't rest until he finds his nemesis, the city’s dangerous leader. Emilia (Eva Green) is a troubled young art student who films here would-be suicides as art installations. Milo (Sam Riley) is a heartbroken twenty-something yearning for the purity of first love. Finally, Peter (Bernard Hill) is a man steeped in religion, searching desperately for his missing son amongst London's homeless. To me it sounds a tad V For Vendetta with a pinch of Donnie Darko, however, after watching the enthralling, dark and delightful trailer I’ve concluded it’s something else entirely. Man it looks errie . . .errie brilliant that is! It premiered at the London Film Festival last October and is set for an Australian release date around April or May. With such an amazing cast (Green is the shiz!) and promising trailer, one can only hope for good things. Above: Phillippe as masked vigilante Preest in the city of Meanwhile.

Tick tock, tick tock

The count down begins. It’s hard to believe Watchmen is only 16 days away from coming to a cinema near you! Man, it feels like forever since news of the nifty project drew legions of internet nerds to it faster than Perez Hilton to cock. Those of you born last week might not know Watchmen is the long-awaited and highly anticipated adaptation of Alan Moore’s award-winning graphic novel (largely considered as the most acclaimed graphic novel of all time). Personally, after reading Watchmen I thought it would be too complex to be made in to a film. Then in rode Zack Synder guns blazing and dedication flaring, fresh off the his success with his Dawn Of The Dead remake and 300 adaptation. Apparently Synder is a massive fan of the graphic novel and was obsessed with trying to match up every scene in the film to panels in the comic book, which sounds like a good thing to me. Anyway, Watchmen is set in an alternate 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society, and the “Doomsday Clock” – which charts the USA’s tension with the Soviet Union – is permanently set at five minutes to midnight. When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the washed-up but determined masked vigilante Rorschach sets out to uncover a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes. As he reconnects with his former crime-fighting legion – a ragtag group of retired superheroes, only one of whom has true powers – Rorschach glimpses a disturbing conspiracy with links to their past and catastrophic consequences for the future. The trailers have gone viral on the net and it’s clear that Synder has brought his signature stylised approach to project. Watch the trailer here. One of the other integral factors of the Watchmen graphic novel was the music and lyrics from folk legends like Bob Dylan and Cat Stevens which is also featured in the trailer. Love em or hate em punk group My Chemical Romance have even jumped on board to do a cover of Dylan’s Desolation Row as the official single for the film. It’s very different from the original but I think it’s worthy none the less. You can listen to it here but just make sure the volume is turned down otherwise your speakers might bleed. Personally, my favourite aspect of the original Watchmen was the characters as they’re essentially the most important thing about the story. Well kudos to the casting directors as just going off the trailers alone, it looks like the actors have encapsulated the unique super-heroes perfectly. I look forward to seeing more of my favourite character, Dr Manhattan, in the feature length version which is out nation wide on March 5. Oh! I almost forgot the wicked tagline: `Who watches the Watchmen?'
Perfection me thinks.
Below: some of the latest images off the Watchmen set
