More Narnia than you & your talking Lion can handle

Since people cannot seem to get enough, I bring you more Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader goodness - this time with added awesome! Head on over to the Gold Coast Bulletin's website and a nifty story I did on how filming is progressing on board the 100ft Dawn Treader ship at Cleveland. And yes, would you believe I have an actual byline and not just the guise of Movie Mazzupial . . .oh, the horror.

READ THE EXCLUSIVE HERE.

The online team have done a stellar job at putting together a few picture galleries to keep you up to date on how the movie is coming along, so I recommend you check those out too.

Hope you enjoy and stay posted for more Narnia as I have another studio set visit penciled in over the next few weeks. Cue excited squealing.

I don't brag I mostly Host

Unbeknownst to any female under the age of 16, the author of the Twilight series Stephenie Meyer has this other book called The Host. That too is getting a big screen adaptation now the fan following of the Twilight movie series has reached pandemic proportions. I know what you’re thinking, and yes, Meyer’s work is spreading faster than herpes but the difference between The Host and the teenage vampire romance plague is it's actually good.

Her first book targeted at adults, The Host contains none of the `I’m so mature for my age, nobody understands me’ mantra, rather a whole bunch of sci-fi awesomeness instead. The book is a lot darker than her previous works and having read the novel myself, I’m pleased to say this is an original piece of writing and Meyer convincingly creates a violent, apocalyptic world that you get lost in. Problem is, the book is so complex and much of the story so internal you can pretty much bet on the fact they’re going to stuff the movie up. Variety, who were the first to pounce on the story, describe the plot as follows:

"Meyer’s novel is a love story set in the near future on Earth, which has been assimilated by an alien species that call themselves “Souls.” They are benevolent parasites that subsume the conscious of humans and take possession of their bodies. One such soul, The Wanderer (so named because she has wandered among so many different worlds) is fused with a dying human named Melanie Stryder, in an attempt to locate the last pocket of surviving humans on Earth. The Wanderer cannot subsume the forceful Melanie, and they battle for the girl’s memories and her spirit."

It’s actually a lot more badass than that but I couldn’t be bothered breaking down the story for you myself as I don’t have a spare eight months. Film Drunk did a much better job at summing up the plot and had this to say;

"Hmm, I think using your surviving brain cells to refuse assimilation into an invading horde of boring parasites might be a metaphor for growing up Mormon."

For those who vomit a little in their mouth every time they see a douche wearing a Team Edward shirt, the good news is most of the characters in The Host are older and more complex than in the Twilight series. In even better news, the team set to bring the novel to the big screen are pretty darn wicked.

At the fore are producers Nick Wechsler, Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz who used their own money to acquire the screen rights and will develop the project independently. More importantly, New Zealand filmmaker Andrew Niccol is onboard to write and direct the flick which is a big comfort for those concerned they might try and turn this into a juvenile, adventure, love-story targeted at Twihards*. Niccol was nominated for an Oscar back in ’99 for his work writing The Truman Show and he has also made Lord Of War, The Terminal, S1m0ne and Gattaca. Of course Meyer has to have her finger in every pie and she’s “heavily” involved with the project. There’s been no news about casting or release dates yet and The Host hasn’t even been added as a project to imbd it’s THAT fresh.

Stay posted for more updates and constant grillings of Twihards.

*Twihards: first coined by Movie Mazzupial in November ’08, the term is used to describe semi- hardcore Twilight fans.

Disney + Marvel = zombies

Don’t question my headline, it’s true. Well, if your legendary illustrator Jeffrey Thomas that is. Since the big buy up a few months ago (when Disney purchased Marvel) it was only a matter of time before someone did a Disney Marvel mash-up. I personally didn’t think it would end up this awesome as Thomas has posted a seriously brilliant collection of Disney Princesses; zombified. I believe the official title is Twisted Princess but whatever. Check them out below.

My favourite is his take on Pocahontas, though the Snow White and Cinderalla are quite spectacular also. You can check out more of Thomas’ artwork on his blog The Art Of Jeffrey Thomas. While we’re on the topic of Disney, I’m so excited to hear they’re making a return to the beautiful 2D animated films they became renowned for. In January 2010 they’re releasing their version of The Princess And The Frog and you can check out the trailer below . . .it gave me goosebumps.

Disney are also busy finishing up work on Rapunzel, which is scheduled for release in January 2011 for us Aussies. The concept art looks positively magically and you can judge for yourself below.

Something stirred inside me when I heard about Disney making a return to 2D animation, after all, it’s what they do best. More than that, I grew up watching Disney animated movies and they’re a treasured, magical part of my childhood. Yeah, yeah not everyone enjoys getting lost in the fairytales, the gorgeous animation or musical numbers but I like to think there’s a large number or people who do. I get a lil’ warm and fuzzy knowing that even though I’m all grown up now *cough millions of other little girls will get to experience the magic (yes, I said it – magic) of Disney.

By popular vote I will go slap myself in the face now.

And it just keeps getting newer . . .and, er, moonier

Prepare yourselves Twihards as the third, and most likely the final The Twilight Saga: New Moon trailer has gone up.
WATCH THE LATEST TRAILER HERE.
As much as I hate to admit it, it actually looks . . .pretty good. This is the first trailer that offfers a better look at Dakota Fanning and Michael Sheen as Volturi badasses (not to mention plenty of shirtless Edward and shirtless, wet Jacob for the Twihards). Plus my favourite scenes from the book (when Bella wakes up screaming and when she jumps off the cliff) are both in the trailer.
This is the longest, juciest trailer offering we've had so far and likely to be last one we get (besides a few tv spots) in the lead up to its November release.
For those of you playing at home The Twilight Saga: New Moon has a November 19 release date here in Oz.

Tomorrow When The War Began today!

It’s like a dream! Seriously, I think I need to slap myself because I have literally been dreaming of a movie adaptation of one of my favourite book series of all time – the Tomorrow series. And now it’s coming true! Next you know I’ll be marrying Mark Wahlberg and all my fantasies will come to fruition. Sigh.
Anyway, to celebrate the first book in the series, Tomorrow When The War Began, hitting the big screen I thought I’d give you the comprehensive low down on everything related to the film version. And I do mean everything.

The Plot
If by some chance you have been living under a rock for, like, ever and don't know the plot of arguably the best Australian book series then you deserve a slap. Followed by a kick. Then an explanation. John Marsden’s best-selling series of books, the Tomorrow series has sold nearly 2 million copies in Australia and New Zealand. It spans seven books with a spin-off series titled The Ellie Chronicles across another three novels. As much as I'd love to detail the plot of each of the books, that would contain too many spoilers and ruin things for you down the track. If you want that though . . . check out the Wikipedia entry here. Anywho, the the first novel, Tomorrow When The War Began, follows a group of outback teenagers who decide to wage a guerrilla war after Australia is invaded by a foreign power. It's an amazing book and if you haven't read any of the entries in the series I recommend you get on it.

The Team
Pick me, pick me! Sorry, I couldn't help myself. What an impressive, juicy team! The film is being directed by Stuart Beattie who is making his directorial debut and had this to say;

"I was instantly attracted to this project because I was looking to make a character-based but commercial action movie set in Australia that could compete on the international stage. Tomorrow has all the action, but also has the heart. Ellie and her friends are all wonderful, complex, engaging characters who make the ride worth so much more than the price of admission."

The only way to make this baby is to have it as a teen action blockbuster, and Beattie is certainly the man to do it. He's also wrote the screenplay for the flick and his past screen writing credits include Australia, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and Collateral. There’s loads of action, romance, suspense and drama throughout the series making for a promising recipe for box-office success.

The Cast
There’s been only one name confirmed so far and that’s 19-year-old Aussie actress Caitlin Stasey (above) in the lead role of Ellie Linton. Linton is the integral character in all of the books, so Stasey will have her work cut out for her playing the leader of the group. This will be her feature film debut, with her previous acting credits including recurring roles on Neighbours and The Sleepover Club. She also starred as Snow White in the UK's Theatre Royal production of the classic fairytale. Personally, I think she’s a pretty awesome choice as not only is she one of the only decent actresses on Neighbours, it’s also great to have an Aussie lass in the lead role of one of the most popular Australia novel series where the story in itself is so quintessentially Australian. She had this to say on her casting:

"I was ecstatic! I have a lot of respect for Ellie's character and feel privileged to be playing such an inspirational young female role"

Nicely put. Director/writer Stuart Beattie had this to say about Caitlin's casting:

"There was an exhaustive audition process and I have been privileged to see some very talented young actors. Caitlin captured the perfect balance of intelligence, vulnerability and strength that is essential to this character."

No news on who any of the other cast members are yet but fingers crossed mega Queensland talent Matthew Scully (below, right) will land a role as Homer or one of the other lead males. He was amazing in Storage and would be perfect as Homer, no?
Getting It Going
Paramount Pictures will handle distribution and marketing of the film in Australia and New Zealand. Principal investor Omnilab Media, through its production arm, Ambience Entertainment is taking on the first novel in the series. Whether the remaining six novels and three follow-up books will also be made in to films depends on the success of the first, and the ability to chronogenically freeze the lead cast members so they’re not 50 when the franchise finally wraps up. With production investment from Screen Australia and assistance from the
NSW Dept of State and Regional Development, Tomorrow When The War Began will be produced entirely in Australia with production scheduled to commence principal photography in the Hunter Valley at the end of September. It's scheduled with a 2010 release date in Australia and dear lord, I hope it's made properly. If so, it could turn out to be an Australian classic, just like the novels.

You can check out some more info on the flick in a piece I did for Empire online. Enjoy.

You make me Brick

Well, dear Siamese Saffron's blogazine Side Street Sydney is tearing up the little slice of interweb it lives in. On that note, faithful readers, I bring you my first post on SSS about one of my favourite all time films - Brick. Yeah, yeah, I know I harp on about it a lot but this post gives you a more in-depth look at the movie. C-c-check it out here. Now just because it doesn't have a Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader update or a New Moon picture, that's no reason not to look and learn more about this amazing lil film.
Oh, I almost forgot; Happy Fathers Day and all that bull$shit.
Above: a scene from Brick (this is way better than any other Robert Pattison image with tousled hair - ick).

New New Moon!

This just in - a fresh poster from The Twilight Saga: New Moon. Seriosuly, this little beyatch was posted all of 17 minutes ago so this update is fresh, fresh, fresh. Like, Taylor Lautner's abs fresh. Straight from New Moon's twitter account I bring you the Volturi clan - As you can see, Dakota Fanging looks pretty darn gnarly as the evil vampire Jane, and her twin really ups the creep factor. Most notably though, the power of accomplished actor Michael Sheen's presence literally jumps off the poster as Aro - the leader of the Volturi. I have a feeling he's going to tear this role up like it was someones trachea. Pun intended.
Oh, and according to the New Moon twitter account another new trailer is to premiere at the up and coming MTV VMA Awards. Stay posted.

FYI Empire magazine's Australasia website has posted some more extensive pics and New Moon rundown which you can check out HERE.

Side Street Awesome!

My dear friend Siamese Saffron has officially launched her fantastic, ferocious, fabulous website Side Street Sydney. I'm no good at even trying to describe the nature of its awesomeness so I'll let this quote from the site explain to you what it's all about:

"Side Street, Sydney is a blogazine dedicated to the fine city of Sydney and the competing passions of its people and its admirers. In the site, there will be a new post every day that is dedicated to a different aspect of our city life."

You can check it out here. Or here. Here perhaps? Maybe here.

By some glitch of fate I've been lucky enough to get a role as the regularly contributing movie critic, but I will also be writing articles about stuff I can't cover here that interests me too. Okay, nothing interests me more than movies but street art and hip hop come in at a respectable second and third so there will articles and interviews on both of those from my camp. The other contributors are covering everything from poetry to the young homeless so get your booty in to gear and head on over there now. Now.
Much movie love,

Movie Mazzupial xx
P.S. The above person is not me, haha tricked you! It's indeed the lovely Siamese Saffron aka birth mother of Side Street Sydney.

Just Jossing around

God aka Joss Whedon brings you these brilliant posters for his next film The Cabin In The Woods. And yes, these are the legitimate movie posters. And yes, he is incredibly awesome.
That is all.
